How long does it take to heat the branding iron?

The heating time depends on the size of the branding iron and the material you’re working with.

In most cases, it takes between 5 and 30 minutes for the branding iron to reach the right temperature.

What affects the heating time?

  • Size: Larger branding irons take longer to heat up
  • Material: Different materials require different temperatures

Recommended temperatures

  • Wood: 300–400°C
  • Leather: approx. 150°C (avoid overheating to prevent burning)

Tip for best results

Always test your branding iron on scrap material first.
This helps you find the perfect temperature and avoid mistakes on your final product.

Is a branding iron suitable for the leather that I am using?

JH Machining branding irons are suitable for a wide range of natural leathers, including:

  • Snakeskin
  • Crocordile leather
  • Ostrich leather
  • Calfskin
  • Buffalo leather
  • Cowhide
  • Split leather
  • suede
  • Nubuck
  • All types of top leather
Which types of leather are not suitable?
Our branding irons are not recommended for:
  • Artificial leather (PU, imitation leather, skai or artificial leather)
  • Glued leather
  • Plastic coated leather
Why is artificial leather not suitable?

Imitation leather often contains synthetic layers that react poorly to heat.
This can cause the material to burn, melt or deform, resulting in an unclear or damaged imprint.

For the best results, we always recommend using high-quality natural leather.

Is the branding iron suitable for the wood that I am using?

JH Machining branding irons are suitable for almost all types of wood, including:

  • Applewood
  • Beech
  • Douglas fir
  • Oak
  • Maple
  • Ash
  • Pine
  • Elm
  • Cherry
  • Larch
  • Mahogany
  • Walnut
  • Padauk
  • Purpleheart
  • Yew
  • Teak
  • Wenge
  • Zebrano
  • All types of hardwood

What should you keep in mind?

Different types of wood react differently to heat:

  • Soft wood burns faster and requires less heat
  • Hardwood requires higher temperatures for a clear imprint

For the best result, always test your branding iron on scrap wood first.

Not sure if your wood is suitable?

Feel free to contact us, we’re happy to help you choose the right settings for your material.

Can I buy a new branding iron plate for an existing heating element?

Yes, this is possible. Branding plates can be easily attached and removed using a screwdriver.

What should you keep in mind?

To ensure the best performance, it’s important that your heating element is suitable for the new plate:

  • The heating element must have sufficient wattage
  • A heating element designed for a small plate may not be powerful enough for a larger one
  • The size of the new plate should not differ significantly from your current plate

Not sure which size you need?

Feel free to contact us, we’ll gladly advise you on the right combination for your setup.

Can you also supply larger branding irons than the standard sizes?

Yes, larger sizes are available on request.

What should you consider with larger branding irons?

For the best result, the surface you’re branding must be completely flat and evenly heated.

With larger branding irons, this can be more challenging, which may affect the clarity of the imprint.

Need advice on larger sizes?

We’re happy to help you choose the right size for your application.
Feel free to contact us via phone or email to discuss the possibilities.

How big will the logo on the branding iron be?

Your logo is always scaled to fill the branding iron as much as possible, while keeping the original proportions intact.

How does sizing work?

  • The longest side of your logo (width or height) determines the final size
  • The aspect ratio is never changed, so your design will not be stretched or distorted
  • We maintain a small margin of approximately 1.5 mm on each side to ensure a clean and precise result

What does this mean for your design?

Your logo will appear as large, sharp and clear as possible within the size of the branding iron.

The branding iron is meant for leather (bags, wallets and bracelets). Can you tell me how long I have to heat before I can use the branding iron?

When branding leather (such as bags, wallets or bracelets), we recommend heating your branding iron for approximately 15 minutes.

This allows the iron to reach the ideal temperature of around 150°C.

Why is temperature important for leather?

Leather is a sensitive material, and the right temperature is essential for a clean result:

  • Too hot → the leather may burn or deform
  • Too cold → the imprint will be unclear

Our recommendation

For the best and most consistent results, we recommend using an electric branding iron with a temperature controller. This allows you to maintain a stable temperature and achieve a precise, professional imprint.

Tip for best results

Always test your branding iron on scrap leather first to find the perfect balance of temperature, pressure and timing.

How long does it take to mark a burger bun with a branding iron?

Branding a burger bun takes only 2–5 seconds per imprint once the branding iron is fully heated.

What about the heating time?

Before use, the branding iron needs approximately 15-30 minutes to heat up, depending on the size.

What does this mean in practice?

After the initial heating time, you can work quickly and efficiently:

  • Brand each bun in just a few seconds
  • Prepare large batches in advance
  • Ideal for busy kitchens and events
How is the branding iron for dishes heated?

Our branding irons for dishes are electrically heated, making them easy and safe to use.

What are the dimensions of the branding iron for dishes?

The size of the stamp depends on the shape of your logo:

  • Round: 50 mm diameter
  • Square: 50mm x 50mm
  • Rectangle: 60mm x 35mm

How will my logo fit within these sizes?

We always scale your logo to fit perfectly within the selected size, ensuring the best possible result.

Your full design will remain clearly visible, without distortion, so you get a sharp and professional imprint.

What foods can I use the branding iron on?
Branding irons work best on foods with a flat and even surface, allowing your logo to appear sharp and clear. Examples are:
  • Brioche Buns
  • Soft sandwich rolls
  • burger buns
  • Citrus peels

What should you keep in mind?

For the best result, choose foods with a smooth, dry surface. Uneven or very moist surfaces may reduce the clarity of the imprint.

Is our logo suitable for a branding iron for dishes?

In most cases, yes. Almost any logo can be used for a branding iron.

How do we ensure the best result?

We carefully review every logo before production.
If we believe your design may not produce a clear result, we will contact you and suggest improvements.

Thanks to our extra-deep engraving, even fine details remain visible on buns and other food surfaces.

For example: a 30 × 30 mm logo can be placed on a 35 × 35 mm branding iron.

Prefer a specific size or margin? Simply mention it in the order notes.

Which shape should i choose?

For the best result, we recommend matching the shape of your logo:

A wax gun is designed to heat the wax evenly, ensuring smooth application and consistent seals.
